5 Most Common Roadside Emergencies

June 27, 2024

Getting stuck on the side of the road can be a nightmare for any driver. Whether you're commuting to work, heading on a road trip, or just running errands, roadside emergencies can strike at any moment. Knowing how to handle these situations can save you time, money, and stress. Let's look into the five most common roadside emergencies and how to tackle them efficiently.

1. Flat Tires

Flat tires are perhaps the most frequent roadside emergency drivers face. They can happen for various reasons, including punctures from sharp objects, hitting a curb, or simply from wear and tear. If you find yourself with a flat tire, the first step is to pull over safely to the side of the road. Make sure your vehicle is on level ground and away from traffic.

Next, locate your spare tire, jack, and lug wrench. If you're unsure how to change a tire, now is the time to learn! Start by loosening the lug nuts, jacking up the car, removing the flat tire, and replacing it with the spare. Tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to ensure even pressure. Remember, spare tires are temporary solutions, so get to a repair shop as soon as possible for a permanent fix.

2. Dead Batteries

Few things are more frustrating than turning the key in the ignition and hearing nothing but a click. Dead batteries are another common roadside issue, often caused by leaving lights on, extreme temperatures, or an old battery. If your car won't start, the first step is to try and jump-start it. You'll need a set of jumper cables and another vehicle with a functioning battery.

Position both cars so the batteries are close but not touching. Connect the red jumper cable to the dead battery's positive terminal and the other end to the positive terminal of the good battery. Then, attach the black cable to the good battery's negative terminal and the other end to an unpainted metal surface on the dead car. Start the working car, let it run for a few minutes, then try starting your car. If it starts, keep it running for a while to charge the battery. If it doesn't, you may need a new battery or further assistance.

3. Overheating Engine

An overheating engine can be alarming and dangerous. It's often caused by a malfunctioning cooling system, low coolant levels, or a broken thermostat. If you notice your temperature gauge rising or steam coming from under the hood, pull over immediately and turn off the engine.

Do not attempt to open the radiator cap while the engine is hot, as this can cause severe burns. Instead, wait for the engine to cool down. Once it's safe, check the coolant levels and add more if needed. If you're unsure where the problem lies, it's best to call Naples Towing & Recovery. Driving with an overheating engine can lead to major engine damage.

Regular maintenance can help prevent overheating, so ensure your cooling system is checked routinely.

4. Running Out of Fuel

Running out of fuel is a surprisingly common roadside emergency, often due to overestimating how far you can travel on a nearly empty tank or not paying attention to the fuel gauge. If you find yourself stranded without gas, the best course of action is to call for roadside assistance.

In some areas, fuel delivery services can bring you enough gas to get to the nearest station. Alternatively, if you're close to a gas station, walking there to get fuel is an option, but it should only be done if it's safe and legal to do so. To avoid this situation, try to refuel when your tank gets below a quarter full, especially on long trips or in areas with few gas stations.

5. Lockouts

Locking yourself out of your car is an inconvenience that happens to even the most careful drivers. It's easy to do, especially if you're in a rush or distracted. The first step is to remain calm and assess the situation. If you have a spare key with you or nearby, great! If not, calling for assistance is the best way to go.

You can use a slim jim or a coat hanger to unlock the door, but this can damage your vehicle if not done correctly. If you're unsure, it's best to call a professional roadside assistance. To prevent lockouts, consider investing in a keyless entry system or keeping a spare key in a secure but accessible place.
